A Holistic Approach to Health

Have you noticed that health issues are changing as the world we live in changes.  People are being effected more by digestive issues, lack of exercise, lack of nutrients, electro-magnetic fields (EMFs) from mobile phones and other technology, there are more chronic fatigue illnesses, depression and undiagnosed illnesses.

Much of this is linked to our changing fast paced lifestyles, poor quality food, increased stress, alcohol consumption and changes in technology.

Doctors may take a while to diagnose correctly, which can leave people feeling at a loss to know where to turn.  In any event, even when diagnosed, the medication you receive from the medical profession will usually only suppress symptoms and not provide a cure.  Medication in itself can cause side effects and is often ineffective.

It is well documented that people who take responsibility for their own health have a much better chance of healing – quicker and more thoroughly.

Using a Holistic Approach to Health and Well-Being

Health maintenance should be a lifestyle in the same way that good diet and exercise should form part of your lifestyle.  The sad truth is that we often do not take positive action towards good health and well-being until we have health issues.  Often then it is a long climb back to feeling well and in some cases it never happens.

A holistic approach involves looking at the various aspect of your life that, when addressed, will help you to be healthier.  Such areas may include:

  • Nutrition
  • Hydration
  • Balanced Exercise
  • Relaxation Time
  • Working Hours
  • Creating ‘down time’ in the evening away from stimulations
  • Addressing emotional stresses and problems
  • Dealing with behavioural issues and habits
  • Environmental issues
  • Spiritual

Sometimes this involves making some tough decisions and I have seen people rather stay in poor health, whether that be mentally or physically, than make those tough decisions.

Types of Holistic Therapies

Holistic health is a growing industry with new therapies being available on a frequent basis. Energy therapy is one of the most popular types of therapy given that we are so influenced by energy and that we are basically energy.  Therapies such as Emotional Freedom Technique have been around for some time and now acknowledged in the Western World as creating impressive changes for people to release issues such as grief, sadness, subconscious blocks, cravings, pain and many other issues.

However, the list of holistic therapies is long but here are a few you may or may not have considered or be familiar with:

  • Hypnotherapy
  • Matrix Reimprinting
  • Massage
  • Bowen Therapy
  • Neuro-Linguistc Programming (NLP)
  • Laser Treatment
  • Colour Therapy (Colour Mirrors)
  • Reiki
  • Shiatsu
  • Yoga
  • Meditation
  • Mindfulness
  • Aromatherapy
  • Bach Flower Remedies
  • Homeopathy
  • Acupressure
  • Acupuncture
  • Hydropathy

Therefore if you are seeking to either maintain your good health or improve your health, a good start with is look at the areas of your life that need addressing and seek out therapies that appeal to you. Word of mouth is a good way to learn about what’s available and seeking good therapists.  It is also worth checking the credentials of your therapist(s).  For example in terms of hypnotherapy, I am a Member of the General Hypnotherapy Register and General Hypnotherapy Standards Council.  This means that my training covered certain criteria and that I am doing continued professional development as well as giving you peace of mind that I am suitably qualified.
