Postnatal Depression or Postpartum Depression (I will refer to as PND for ease) is said to effect 1 in 10 woman after childbirth but I would not be surprised if the true figure is higher than that. It can effect men as well as women, which may come as a surprise to many. Often parents can have ‘baby blues’ after the birth of a child but usually this only lasts a few weeks.
Often women suffering with PND keep it to themselves, not even telling their partner or family members how they feel. They often feel that they should be happy and the fact that they don’t feel good leads them to think ill of themselves and feelings of guilt. This can make the depression worse and cause them to feel even more isolated.
Very often there are complications with the birth. This in itself is a traumatic event and can cause bonding issues especially as the child may need to be taken away from the mother for treatment. There may be stresses going on in your life that are unrelated to the birth but the added strain of a new born, the lack of sleep, additional responsibility and worries can result in the onset of PND.
Signs of Postnatal Depression include:
- feeling overwhelmed
- sadness and low mood
- lack of enjoyment and loss of interest in life experiences
- difficulty sleeping at night yet tired during the day
- difficulty bonding with your baby
- not wanting to socialise
- difficulty concentrating and making decisions
- feeling isolated.
Rarely but at a more extreme level there may be thoughts of not wanting your baby or hurting the baby.
PND does not necessarily pass in a few weeks or months. It can lead to added complications such as overeating, addictions, feelings of lack of self worth, anxiety, long term depression, inability to bond with your child and relationship issues.
Very often the root cause of PND can be resolved by using subconscious and energy therapies in a completely natural way. I have worked with mothers to overcome PND using these powerful therapies, usually people reach out when the PND becomes unbearable or they are exhausted all other possible options but often addressing it at an early stage can bring that much needed balance and harmony to your life. Hypnotherapy and Emotional Freedom Technique are some of my more commonly used therapies but please do contact me to find out more.
A history of mental health problems may make the chances of PND more likely but PND can happen to any mother and, as I’ve said, some fathers.
Importantly do not suffer in silence. If you think that every other mother is coping blissfully with her new baby you are most likely disillusioned. In the same way they will be unaware of how you are feeling.
Practical things you can do which may help ease the negative feelings include:
- Gentle exercise
- Eating healthily
- Speak to your partner about how you feel
- Speaking to some friends
- Take time for you
- Getting help from friends or family so you can get some sleep and time out for you
- Don’t be hard on yourself – be gentle
The birth of your child should be an enjoyable experience. There is a way out of PND.
“Working with Ann was an entirely life changing experience.
Ann’s methods even brought out events that I hadn’t registered had consciously caused me trauma; I suppose once you are hurting so much that you no longer feel pain, or indeed any feelings either given or received, you stop acknowledging new wounds. Through hypnotherapy, EFT and the use of colour therapy Ann gave me the tools to delicately unwind the metaphorical, failing dressings covering my wounds and heal them completely rather than just covering them up again.
Ann enabled me to open myself up to feeling loved and give love to my baby girl, my boys and my husband and to trust again. I can now sleep peacefully, switching off to all the noise of everyday life. I can confidently stand tall and walk into buildings that once left me a quivering, sobbing wreck.
While I know the journey was mine alone to make, it was my choosing to put these events to rest and my knowing that the time was right for me to accept these changes, I couldn’t have made that journey without Ann’s unfailing guidance every step of the way, to see the journey to its conclusion. Ann really has a gift for instilling trust, a feeling of safety and calmness in her little sanctuary. Ann has given me my life back, given my husband back his wife and soul mate and my children their loving mother, for that we are all eternally grateful.”
